ContractWrangler — Web App UI Redesign Overview

The Challenge

ContractWrangler is an AI-powered platform that helps legal and operations teams extract key metadata from complex legal documents — a genuinely powerful capability serving users who work with contracts at serious scale. The problem was that the interface had not kept pace with the product's ambition. Dense layouts, unclear navigation patterns, and inconsistent visual hierarchy made it harder than necessary for users to extract the insight they needed, undermining trust in a product that was technically sound.

Legal and ops professionals are not forgiving users — they have high standards for precision and low tolerance for UI friction. Any redesign had to earn their trust immediately: the interface needed to feel controlled and deliberate, not busy or experimental. At the same time, it had to meaningfully improve the experience of working through large-scale contract review, where cognitive load is already high and the cost of a missed detail is significant.

Our Approach

We opened with a structured UX audit — mapping every user workflow from document upload through to metadata extraction and export, identifying where navigation broke down, where information density created confusion, and where the interface was asking users to do more cognitive work than the underlying task actually required. The audit surfaced a clear set of prioritised fixes and redesign opportunities.

From there, we rebuilt the interface around a modular layout system designed to handle large-scale content without overwhelming the user. Improved typography hierarchy made the most important information immediately scannable. Smart UI patterns — contextual sidebars, progressive disclosure, and clear state management — reduced the number of decisions users had to make at each step. The full design system was documented for hand-off, ensuring that future product work could build consistently on the new foundation.

The Result

The redesigned product unified a previously fragmented interface into a coherent, intuitive experience — one that made contract data more accessible without sacrificing the precision that legal and ops teams require. ContractWrangler's improved product helped validate its market position, and the company was subsequently acquired by Conga, a leading CLM platform. The redesign demonstrated that thoughtful, user-centred design can be a genuine business asset — not just an aesthetic improvement, but a product investment with measurable commercial value.
